SUPERSKILLS LINEUPS SET
January 27, 06:40 PM EST
On Friday the National Hockey League announced which players will take part in which specific competitions during Saturday's SuperSkills Competition at Scotiabank Place, with Marian Gaborik and Carl Hagelin being the busiest of the Ranger participants in All Star weekend.
Gaborik will represent Team Chara in the Elimination Shootout event as well as the Skills Challenge Relay. He could face Rangers teammate Henrik Lundqvist one-on-one in the shootout, which would add even more spice to the good-natured trash talking they've shared the past few days.
"I own him," Gaborik said of Lundqvist.
"He has to stop living in the past," Lundqvist laughingly said of Gaborik.
The shootout is the only event in which Lundqvist, the assistant captain for Team Alfredsson, will take part. However Rangers rookie Carl Hagelin will be involved in a pair of competitions---the Fastest Skater event and the Elimination Shootout---while representing Team Alfredsson.
Hagelin, who has not skated since the Rangers 3-0 win over Winnipeg Tuesday night, said he would make sure he warmed up his legs and body with a hard on-ice workout at Scotiabank Place Saturday morning in preparation of the SuperSkills Saturday at 7:00 PM.
The rookie also understood why his speedy teammate Gaborik is not taking part in the Fastest Skater competition.
"That's the last thing he needs to do," explained Hagelin. "It is a very tough event and he has had injuries in the past with his groin and whatever. There's no way he should be in that event."
Rangers defenseman Dan Girardi rounds out the Blueshirts contingent at the All Stars, and he will take part in the Accuracy Shooting event.
"I think this weekend is more for the highly-skilled guys than for someone like me," laughed Girardi on Friday. "But this weekend is big for me, and I just hope that I am not in over my head!"
